This article systematizes essential aspects of language learning strategies (LLS). Based on a documentary analysis of previous research, definitions, classifications, teaching models, and diagnostic methods are presented. The study tracks leading international authors to provide updated information. The results compile well recognized taxonomies, and instructional models, identifying common elements such as modeling, guided practice, and transference. Furthermore, diagnostic instruments are detailed, recommending a combination of questionnaires, observation, and interviews for a reliable assessment. It is concluded that LLS instruction, with a teacher acting as a guide and model, is crucial for developing learner autonomy and improving foreign language performance, making the process faster, easier, and more enjoyable. The main purpose is to arouse the interest of teachers and researchers in using LLS to enhance the quality of the learning process.
